The Bigelow Brook Greenway

Bigelow Brook Greenway Shown in Green
History: The Hilliard Mills Portion of the Bigelow Brook Greenway concept was born in 2007 in a discussion with the Hockanum River Linear Park Committee (HRLPC).  The original focus was to join a walking path along the Hilliard Mills section of the brook to the "Hilliard Trail" along the Hockanum River managed by the HRLPC.  The plan was expanded to include the entire 8,000+ foot length of the brook back to Center Springs Pond.

Facts: The Hilliard Mills portion of the Greenway will have over one acre of Greenway space.  This is divided into the nature preserve area south of the brook and the walking trail on the North side.  The walking trail is over 400 feet long.  Hilliard Mills has already begun removing debris and over 15,000 square feet unsafe structures from the brook and surrounding areas as well is removal of invasive Japanese Knotweed along the watercourse.

Plans: Hilliard Mills LLC plans on maintaining the south side of the brook in a natural state. This will include only trash and invasive species removal and native plantings.  The north side will include the walking path itself that will connect to the Timken/Purdy portion of the Greenway.  Plans include a 5' wide trail that will lead to the new Hilliard Mills Gardens Area south of Building #4 and on to the Brookview Patio attached to Building #1.  A walkway attached to the rear of Building #1 will connect the trail to the West Parking lot and on to the HRLPC "Hilliard" trail.  The trail will be open dawn to dusk.
